A connect four board game

How the gamification revolution is changing workplace culture

Whether you are a medium-sized family company, a government agency or Amazon – the world’s largest brand - chances are you employ people.

And there are sometimes things that you want those people to do more of.

Important things.

That’s where the power of gamification can have a dramatic impact. At PentaQuest – an Australian gamification company that is part of the ThinkPlace Global Network – we are seeing huge dividends for companies who incorporate gamification into their teams, internal processes and workplace culture.

Gamification is becoming a transformational movement amongst innovative companies, according to PentaQuest Co-founder Kerstin Oberprieler.

“We’re seeing strong interest given the power of gamification in motivating staff to stay connected, perform optimally, and have fun,” she says.

“We’re seeing companies use gamification to not only drive growth and productivity, but to make their workplaces fun, safe, and enjoyable.”

Why is this shift happening?

Because it works. A 2018 study by TalentLMS showed that 87% of employees agreed that gamification makes them more productive, 84% said it made them more engaged, and 82% said they were happier at work. This shift held up across all age demographics.

Kerstin and her team are global leaders in this rapidly-emerging space, working with innovative companies such as Amazon and Carsales, public sector leaders including the Australian and Singaporean Governments, as well as global not-for-profit organisations.

Oberprieler recently presented emerging insights from her PhD thesis on workplace gamification in GamiCon in Chicago, US and Computer Human Interface Play in Melbourne. This research is showing the importance of tailoring gamification to the uniqueness of the context, which is especially important in today’s knowledge-based and fast-paced workplaces.

How companies are using it

The PentaQuest platform helps teams and organisations by recognising and rewarding continuous learning and professional development. It makes it easier to align individual employee behaviours with organisational strategy.

PentaQuest is working with a team at Amazon to gamify their approach to professional development. As an innovative company and team, Amazon is exploring gamification as a way to engage staff in a way that encourages performance and rewards employees for going above and beyond.

Staff engage with activities and challenges ranging from mandatory professional development tasks (like training and completing career goals) through to best-practice continuous development (like asking colleagues and clients for feedback, collaborating, and sharing knowledge). They also earn rewards for completing training and for exploring and experimenting with new ways of working and using software.

The impact of gamification

When you introduce PentaQuest’s gamification platform to your workplace improvements in employee performance and satisfaction quickly follow. A recent project for a government client in Australia produced:

  • A 140% increase in completion of non-mandatory leadership and development activities (comparing those using our platform with those not using it)
  • The Monthly Challenge feature increased awareness and understanding of workplace wellbeing from 58% to 91%
  • A significant increase in completion of cyber security activities, from 4.6 activities per month to 41.5

The PentaQuest platform is extremely customisable, enabling our clients to tailor the focus of the gamification to their employees and business needs as they emerge.

What is our gamification platform?

The PentaQuest gamification platform helps position teams at the cutting edge of their industry by aligning individual professional development goals to an organisational strategy. It is a customisable digital platform that encourages and incentivises individual and team behaviours by linking them to a rewards structure and team-based competition.

“The gamification platform puts the power of gamification into the hands of our clients,” Oberprieler says.

‘’We also do gamification design consulting, helping organisations understand what gamification and how it can be applied to their specific context and challenge.”

What leading businesses and organisations are saying about Pentaquest

We’ve recently work with global online classifieds provider CarSales  who loved our “really inspiring” gamification exploration workshops.

One of our government clients had this to say about a gamified app we designed for them to engage their citizens:

“We're really happy about the focus on our business. You've given us a really clear way forward for the next few months. This gives us exactly what we need to better inform our decision makers and help advance this project. Thank you for the fantastic work you have done for us.”

We delivered a gamification research and design report to another client, who said:

“Thank you so much for this fantastic data - as well as being really rich and informative you have kept it incredibly accessible, and that will absolutely help when I present the data to my boss and others. Thanks again PentaQuest, it was such a privilege working with you and I look forward to future work together.”

How does PentaQuest fit within the larger TP global network?

PentaQuest is part of the ThinkPlace Global Association. With ThinkPlace Design Studios across five countries it shares the same vision of creating public value. It also shares the same beliefs, values and even design methodologies.

PentaQuest is already helping ThinkPlace staff stay connected and at the cutting edge of their disciplines. At ThinkPlace we have incorporated gamification into many aspects of our workplace experience and culture and have seen tangible and lasting results.
